Scrolling patterns vary wildly from day-to-day, let alone person-to-person. Some go down YouTube rabbit holes, carefully curating playlists to get them through the day as soon as they wake up. Others exclusively live on TikTok and Instagram, and instantly click away as soon as the runtime passes 15 seconds. Many don’t watch traditional videos at all: the boom of Twitch and revitalization of Pinterest proves audiences are hungry for live streams and old-school images. 

Even within the same platform, you may never show up. Let’s take a look at Instagram alone! There are three places you could be discovered.

 

  1. Feed Posts, where you’ll find a combination of video and image posts.
  2. Reels, where you’ll only find vertical videos. 
  3. Stories, where you’ll find images and videos that disappear after 24 hours.

(Side Note: Just 5 years ago “Reels”- which is now the most popular part of the platform- didn’t exist. That is how fast things change online.)

 

It’s not just Instagram that’s becoming increasingly diversified. YouTube Shorts is seeing a consistent explosion of attention. TikTok has recently committed to boosting Images at 2.5 the impression rate of videos in an attempt to bring more photo posts to the platform. 


So Is it Hopeless? Do I Just Give Up on Social Media?

Absolutely not.

Refusing to leverage the incredible power of social media because it’s hard is the fastest way to ruin your business. Of course, it’s hard, marketing is hard, but so is anything worth fighting for.
